On the steep mountain range, rising north of the provincial road Arginonta \u2013 Skalia, in the middle of the rocky slope, there is a plateau approximately 50 x 100 meters in size, known as Aginaries. The area is scattered with the ruins of buildings, which belong to an ancient settlement. This archaeological site is also referred to as Vryokastro. The location is naturally fortified, as it is surrounded by high and steep cliffs, with the only access route being from the southeastern side.<\/p>\n

On the plateau, the remnants of about twenty-five buildings are found, constructed from rough-hewn stones without any binding material. These buildings follow the slopes and peculiarities of the land, which is why they have both straight and curved sides. Among them, the remains of a large building stand out in the southeastern part of the plateau.<\/p>\n

Its construction is more carefully executed than the others, which is why it is better preserved. It likely served as the residence of a prominent individual or as a religious structure. At the western edge of the plateau, near the cliff’s edge, a long retaining and protective low wall has been built. Remains of masonry are also found on the southwestern slopes of the plateau.<\/p>\n

On the surface, only a few fragments of pottery are found in the area. Of the shards identified, most are unpainted, while some bear a black glaze and are dated to the prehistoric and geometric periods.<\/p>\n

Aginaries is one of the earliest settlements on Kalymnos. Based on the surface findings, human presence in this area dates back to prehistoric times and continues into the geometric period. The lack of later indications is likely due to the abandonment of the settlement.<\/p>\n
