It dates back to Prehistoric and Geometric Times. The few remnants of a settlement in the region of Domata in Arginonta belong to the Hellenistic period. The deep and leeward gulf of Arginonta was a safe anchorage for ships. An oil press also operated inside it, however, only its double base is preserved. There are also ruins of an ancient olive mill a short distance west of Kastri. The name Emporios indicates that, in ancient times, this area was an “emporeio”, meaning a trading post.

The modern coastal settlement is built on the site of a Proto-Byzantine / Early Christian settlement. Building remains, ceramic findings and a bath can be found on the surface along the coastal zone. Moreover, the modern church of Saint George has been built on the site of a Proto-Byzantine church, with some parts of its masonry being visible.

In the western part of the settlement of Skalia is located the small church of Saint Mammas, which has been built on the site of an ancient building. Parts of its walls are preserved, up to the height of the roof.

During the 13th century, a small church was constructed on the site of its Holy Altar, with Byzantine frescoes of high artistic value and quality inside. The habitation of the area has continued uninterrupted throughout all subsequent historical periods, up to the present day. Today, the same geographical boundaries of the Hellenistic Damos of Skaliodan encompass the four border villages of Arginonta, Skalia, Emporios, and Palionisos, which maintain close ties with one another, sharing common characteristics, a shared history, and common development prospects.

The area as a whole, due to its centuries-long history, constitutes a unique open-air museum, with numerous points of archaeological and cultural interest.
