Settlement of Emporios

Seaside settlement with a history dating back to antiquity. Ideal for climbing and hiking, with tavernas and warm hospitality.

Emporios is the last seaside settlement on the northwestern part of Kalymnos. Its name comes from the commercial activity that had developed in the area since ancient times. It is a traditional village where, until the late 1980s, the inhabitants mainly engaged in livestock farming and fishing.

From the 1990s, when tourism began to develop in the area, Emporios gained restaurants, tavernas, and rooms for rent. It is considered an ideal destination for those involved in climbing and hiking, as there are safe climbing fields nearby, and routes leading to neighboring areas such as Sykati and Palionisos begin from here.

The area shows archaeological evidence of habitation dating back to prehistoric times. To the north of Emporios stands Kastri, a fortress from the Hellenistic period. Inside it, there was an olive mill, parts of which remain, including its double base. At that time, Emporios was part of the Damos Skaliodan, one of the seven demoi of the ancient Homopolitan League. The modern settlement of Emporios is built on the site of a Proto-Byzantine / Early Christian settlement.

From this settlement, parts of houses and a bath are preserved in the eastern part of the village. Additionally, the Evryotholos, an Early Christian vaulted building, possibly a tomb, is preserved on the hill to the east of the village. Finally, the Church of Saint George was built on the site of an older church.
