Newer church of Saint George

Modern parish church, built on the site of an earlier Early Christian one. The center of the village’s religious life.

The Church of Saint George is located on an elevated point on the west side of the settlement of Emporios. According to oral testimonies of the residents, the church was built between 1860 and 1900 on the site of an earlier church. Saint George is the protector of the village, and the church serves as the religious center of the local community.

Saint George was a Greek soldier in the Roman army, originally from Cappadocia. He served as an officer under Emperor Diocletian and was sentenced to death for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. Later, he was canonized by the Church as a Christian martyr.

The memory of Saint George is celebrated every year on April 23rd with great solemnity and participation from the villagers.
