Post-Byzantine chapel of Saints Peter and Paul

Chapel of the 18th–19th century with frescoes. It is located in the quiet bay of Palionisos with traditional pastoral life.

The Chapel of Saint Peter is located in the bay of Palionisos. This bay offers a beautiful and peaceful environment for anyone who wishes to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The permanent residents of the area are a few families of shepherds and fishermen who have spent their entire lives there and continue to give soul and value to the place of Palionisos, which is a part of them.

Saint Peter’s Church is a remarkable religious monument, a characteristic example of local ecclesiastical architecture, built at the end of the Ottoman period, during the 18th–19th century. The simplicity and austerity of the church reflect the spirituality and religious devotion of the few inhabitants of the area.

Inside the small church, there is preserved fresco decoration from the second half of the 19th century. The depictions of the Saints are painted in the Renaissance style, which flourished on the island of Kalymnos in the second half of the 19th and the early 20th century.

Although there is limited information about the history and architecture of this particular chapel, its presence contributes to the preservation of Kalymnos’ cultural heritage and offers visitors a unique opportunity to connect with the island’s past.
