Ancient settlement “Domata”
Domata is a small rocky plateau located to the southeast of the Arginonta valley. On its western and northern sides, the plateau of Domata is bordered by high cliffs. From this point, there is a direct line of sight to the underlying valley of Arginonta and the sea area to the west of the gulf.
In the area of the plateau, many fragments of roof tiles and a large number of shards of unpainted utilitarian pottery from the Hellenistic period have been found. Among these, several double handles of amphorae from Kos and shards of open vessels with black and red glazing stand out. In the same area, there is also a limestone counterweight from an olive press, with trapezoidal side recesses. The masonry present on the site consists of dry-stone walls, constructions from more recent times.
The archaeological remains provide clear evidence of settlement at the site during the Hellenistic period. As for the absence of building remains, this may be due to their poor construction quality, combined with the cultivation of the area in more recent times.
